Journal Quilt #1

This is the very first in a series of 6 x 6 Journal Quilts that I will create on a weekly basis (roughly) during 2007. I will use this blog to share them so check back! I’ve always wanted to create a larger fabric piece . . . recently my husband has encouraged me to do more art for myself, for our own collection. So, this fabric art will be for us based on whatever happens this year! Every time I create a square I will journal about the piece and print the journal entry onto plain fabric. I will use that fabric to line the back of the square - see above right. At the year’s end I’ll sew all of my journal squares together and proudly hang them up in our home.

January 8, 2007:

This square was done rather quickly; in about an hour or so. I don’t often work with (the color) RED, but this swirly fabric I spied in my stash reminded me of what this past week has been like since we returned from 12 days of vacation – swirly busy! The fabric is printed with celestial swirls and small gold stars; I placed the ribbon to continue that swirly theme and then added gold glitter. The top left image is paper from ARTchix Studio. It’s sewn right onto the fabric by machine. The small blue stars are mini-brads pushed through the fabric to hold the sheer ribbon & are also from Artchix. The bottom right image is a fabric image from Alpha Stamps, glued to the base. I sewed free-form by machine with red thread all over the piece using decorative & plain stitches and thus attached a piece of heavy interfacing to the square while I did. I am happy to have created my first square.
