manatees in our neighborhood!

A large manatee in our canal on the Braden River, March, 2017

I’m still surprised when I hear manatees splashing or surfacing for air. Another name for manatees is the “Sea Cow” . . . I think because they are so large. Manatees can weigh from 1,500 - 1,800 pounds. If you don’t know a lot about manatees, this site will fill you in quickly.

I was lucky to hear first, then see, a small manatee eating mangrove leaves in front of our dock the other day. I grabbed my camera and took a couple short video clips of him eating! If you don’t see the video below, the link is here.

We are lucky to have manatees visit us on the Braden River. They are mostly underwater but sometimes can be seen feeding on the mangroves or popping their snout up to get a breath of air.

Amazing creatures we are blessed to be able to see in our backyard on the Braden River, Florida. I have another post with a video here.
