100 Blocks: Colour Mix Quilt with Frieda
Many thanks to my friend Frieda Oxenham who organized this 100 day Project. In April 2020, during the pandemic, Frieda announced on Instagram that she was participating in The 100 Day Project. “I'm going for making 100 quilt blocks for the 100 day project. I will make one 4.5” x 4.5” block every day. It should not take more than 15 minutes from the cutting to the sewing. The only shapes I will use are squares and rectangles. The blocks are super simple and I would love it if you followed along using your own choice of fabrics. The design I’m using will work with any fabric, patterned or solid. Or mix them up!”
A post sharing photos of my completed 100 Day Colour Mix quilt is HERE. Additional completed quilts are linked at the bottom of this page.
I jumped at the chance to join Frieda and learn more about quilting. I’d recently completed my first quilt - patchwork squares from recycled button-down shirts belonging to my son Dallas. This first quilt I made was quite a learning curve, but I wanted to make another quilt! Frieda’s quilt project seemed perfect. It did not take long to finish one block each day and I learned new skills.
All of the individual blocks I made are shared in a photo album: Colour Mix Quilt Blocks. A sampling of the 100 blocks is below.
This project was started in April, working daily until July of 2020. We used Frieda Oxenham’s quilt block designs to create our own. This gave many of us purpose and enjoyment during the lock-down/shelter-at-home time during the covid pandemic. Completing one quilt block a day gave me needed structure and learning how to make the blocks following Frieda’s daily instructions & examples was perfect. The quilt I made for my son had large 8” squares, so this project with 4.5” squares was a natural progression. The finished quilt size is roughly 48” x 50”. It’s on our living room couch & we use it daily!
ALL 100 of the individual quilt blocks are in an album here: Colour Mix Quilt Blocks — The 100 Day Project.
